The ninth edition of Monesterio Duathlon-Cross On the morning of Sunday, November 6, it brought together almost a hundred participants in the vicinity of the Municipal Football Stadium and the ‘El Tejar’ sports fields. A competition that began at 11 and in which the Triathlon clubs of Don Benito and Jerez de los Caballeros stood out.
The organization feared low participation numbers due to the holding of similar competitions in nearby towns. Even so, despite the fact that fewer entries were registered than in previous editions and some prizes were not awarded, the competition was able to take place with a notable presence of athletes from different corners of Extremadura and Andalusia, as well as a large number of local runners.
Antonio Cerezo López, from Triathlon Trujillo, and Irene Cascajosa Díaz, from Triathlon Don Benito, were the absolute winners of the individual super sprint test. In the men’s category, José María Álvarez Infantes and Fernando Méndez García, both from the Jerez de los Caballeros Triathlon Club, took second and third place. Carolina Gabardino, from Triathlon Montijo, won runner-up in the women’s category, while the prize for the first local finisher went to Francisco José Sánchez.
In the pairs sprint mode, the brothers Daniel and Santiago Martín-Romo, from Don Benito Triathlon, were winners in the men’s category. He was followed in second and third place by Francisco and Marcos Murillo, from the Jerez de los Caballeros Triathlon Club, and Ismael and José Carlos Fernández, respectively. There was no participation of female pairs, but there were mixed ones. Cristina and Javier Collado took first place. The couples made up of Jesús Carlos and Lucía Paz completed the podium; and María Ángeles Granadero and Carlos Ramallo -also first local place-, in that order.
There was no shortage of the Junior Duathlon, which brought together the categories of pre-benjamines, benjamines, juveniles, cadets and children, which finally also took place in the morning.
The Monesterio Duathlon-Cross is a unique test for several reasons: the places through which the competition takes place, the prizes in the form of Iberian products that are given to the winners and the sprint mode in pairs, the only test of these characteristics in Extremadura.
Organized by the Extremadura Triathlon Federation (FEXTRI) and the Monesterio City Council, in collaboration with the General Directorate of Sports of the Government of Extremadura and the Provincial Council of Badajoz, the Monesterio Duathlon-Cross is one of the events of the ‘Cup Provincial Council of Badajoz Duathlon’ and an unmissable event in the Extremadura sports calendar.
